Pets Have Teeth Too!
Imagine not brushing your teeth for a year! Now you can imagine why pets commonly develop dental disease.
Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common conditions encountered in veterinary medicine. Plaque and bacteria accumulate on your pet's teeth providing a foothold for bacteria to begin infecting gums and the roots of teeth. This can result in tooth loss and pain. Furthennore, bacteria may enter the bloodstream through the large network of blood vessels located near the teeth and gums. Studies show that these bacteria may infect major organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart!

Senior/Geriatric Dental Health Plans
Dental disease is extremely common in older pets and correcting the problem is one of the most important ways we can keep your pet healthy and pain free. Metzger Animal Hospital has developed the ASAP health program to answer the important question: Is my pet healthy enough to be sedated for dentistry?
Our ASAP health program has several important medical benefits:
1) Insures your pet is in the low risk category prior to sedation for dentistry.
2) Evaluates function of your pet's internal organs including kidney, liver, and heart.
3) Tests for common diseases in older pets including anemia, infection, diabetes, hyper/hypo-thyroidism, kidney failure, liver disease, cardiac arrhythmias (heart) and certain types of cancer.
4) Allows scientifically based nutritional recommendations for your older pet.

Metzger Animal Hospital Senior and Geriatric ASAP Program
Components of the plan include: comprehensive blood analysis (CBC, biochemical profile, electrolytes, T4), urinalysis, ECG (electrocardiogram), plus dental scaling, polishing, and antibiotics. Our mission at Metzger Animal Hospital is to do whatever we can to maximize the health of your pet. To that end, we are willing to credit the cost of any vaccines received at a regular examination toward the cost of the ASAP program. We are willing to do this because we strongly believe that clean teeth are an effective way to increase the quality of life of your pet.
